Monday 27th of April.  They are getting bigger.

Wednesday 30th April

Tuesday 5th of May.  Our caterpillars have climbed to the top of the cup and attach themselves to the paper disk under the lid.  They will hang in a J shape, shed their exoskeletons one last time, and harden into chrysalides.

The chrysalides are fully hardened.  We have safely moved them to the Hatching Habitat where they will emerge as Painted Lady Butterflies.

After 7-14 days, our Painted Lady Butterflies have emerged from the chysalides.  The butterflies wings have softened and crumpled.  The butterflies have slowly stretched and forced liquid into their veins to strengthen their wings.

The wings have expanded, the butterflies have began to join the two halves of the proboscis together.  The proboscis is like a straw slit in half down the length of the straw.

We placed sugar and water inside the habitat along with fresh fruit for the butterflies to eat.

Class for children with Autism

In our new purpose build class for children with Autism we strive to provide the highest education possible for our children. We are fortunate that our space allows for excellent facilities which include a spacious station based classroom, and a state of the art Occupational Therapy room, a fully fitted kitchen and a shower room.

The stations/areas in the classroom include: individual work stations, a computer station, a music/art/drama station, a listening station, circle area, sand/water play area, library area, an interactive whiteboard, one-to-one teaching table and a group work table.

Each child’s needs and interests are assessed and then an individual programme is designed to address their needs. A range of proven methods are implemented across these programs i.e. TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic & Related Communication Handicapped Children), PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Lámh (Sign Language) and ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis techniques). Using these methods we follow the national curriculum, with a particular emphasis in SPHE (Social Personal Health Education) encouraging independence and communication.

Integrating with the mainstream school is also an important part of our programme and this is done in a programme tailored to each child’s individual needs.
We also provide a social development programme, where we bring the children out and about in our local community.
Our Occupation Therapy room is fitted with lights, large mirrors and other OT (Occupational Therapy) materials, is where our children can relax, play and carry out their OT programs and fulfill their sensory needs. We facilitate their OT programs in conjunction with their Occupational Therapists. We also liaise with Psychological Services, Speech and Language Therapists and Autism Therapists.
