A Healthy Heart
Your heart needs to work hard to keep your body supplied with oxygen. Your heart needs to contract at least 100,000 times a day just for you to stand still. It is no surprise then that you need to have a healthy heart to do this for the rest of your life.
You can feel how many times you heart beats in a minute by taking your pulse. When your heart beats it sends blood rushing through your blood vessels. You can feel your pulse at your neck or your wrist. You can count how many times your heart beats in a minute by taking your pulse for 15 seconds, then multiply it by four.
How Hard Does Your Heart Work?
On the 7th of October as part of our Science class we did an experiment to see how hard our hearts work before and after exercise. Everyone in the class took their pulse for fifteen seconds, multiplied it by four and wrote it down. We then went outside where our teacher Ms. Mc Vey got us to complete running activities. We took our pulses again and recorded the findings. All of our heart rates had increased.

Slogan Competition
As part of the launch of the Active School Flag initiative, children in the middle and senior classes were asked to compose a slogan/motto that we would use throughout the year. The winner was Alecoe Haughey with the slogan:
DON'T SLACK IT AND QUIT,
WHY NOT DO IT AND BE FIT.
This slogan will now form the title on our Active School Flag noticeboard for the year ahead.
The three runners up were:
"Our school is active,
Our school is cool,
We try to stay healthy,
No matter what we do".
(Rachel Scott)
"Our school is Active, we can be too,
So go out and play,
Lets be Active all the way".
(Ellie Rawdon)
Maybe your not in the mood,
But if you do, you might feel good.
(Conor Gallagher)
Alecoe was presented with a Donegal hat by Master Mc Guinness.
Playground Markings
During the first term we painted some beautiful playground markings on to our school yard. We are very grateful to the H.S.E for the kind use of their stencils. We now have a variety of playground marking around the yard for the children to use. The children are very happy with their new games. Thanks to Master Mc Guinness and Kevin Mc Gowan for all their hard work lining them out.

Goalposts and Pitch Outline
The children are delighted with the fabulous new goalposts and nets at the rear of the school. We now have two pitches fully lined out with sets of goals for each pitch. This has enabled us to utilise our yard space better and provide the senior children with separate football pitches. A big thank you to Brendan Mc Shane who sponsored one set of goalposts.
